Classic & obscure British Rock collection

Moving along with my collection. Already have many LPs on Discogs including AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Budgie, Caravan, Deep Purple, Man and Hawkwind.

I am now looking at a collection of some real classic as well as some more obscure British Rock Bands. Starting with 2 albums by The Groundhogs including the inimitable guitar picking of Tony “T.S.” McPhee, one of the all time greats in my view.

Two of my favourite LPs are by little known London band Hustler. They did have their 15 minutes of fame with an appearance on Top of the Pops with their single ‘Get Outa me ‘Ouse’. They made two very different albums, High Street is similar in style to UFO while the second, Play Loud, is more direct, more like AC/DC.

Hustler

Bolex Dementia by Hard Stuff is also a favourite of mine, quite different, one that you have to hear a few times but it is a great album in my opinion.

Also have 2 LPs’ by Lone Star. The first is a little pomp rock in style, think Styx. The second, ‘Firing on all Six’, is more direct and, I think, an absolute classic. Guitarist Paul Chapman went on to replace Michael Schenker at UFO, whilst vocalist John Sloman later joined Uriah Heep.

Next, Live Cutz by Nutz, a band I used to watch quite often at the Croydon Greyhound back in the day. I also have a couple of Pink Fairies LPs to list, Up the Pinks!

Finally a couple of really obscure ones. An album titled ‘Rush’ by a band called Strife and ‘Exposed’ by Strider.

So there you have it, some interesting stuff to watch out for. You can keep up with what I have listed for sale here… https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?q=rocknstuff

The Man band collection coming to Discogs!

Hi Fellow rockers, I have recently started listing my vinyl collection on Discogs for sale.  I started out listing them alphabetically and so far have LPs from AC/DC to Deep Purple listed.

However, I have now decided it makes sense to list them as collections so people interested in related artists can see what I have for sale.

I am starting this off by listing anything related to Welsh band, Man. I already have Greasy Truckers Party recorded at the Roundhouse which features Man as well as Hawkwind and others. I also have solo albums by Man band members Deke Leonard and Clive John listed and I have 9 albums by Man to add, starting with ‘Man 1970’ and ending, appropriately, with ‘Alls Well That Ends Well’.

The collection includes the limited edition live LP ‘Live at the Padget Rooms Penarth’

A particular favourite of mine is the Clive John LP ‘You Always Know Where You Are With a Buzzard’. Some seriously groovy music along with a bizarre mock radio interview featuring guest appearances from guitarist John Williams and pop star Andy Fairweatherlow.

You can see what I have for sale here… https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?q=rocknstuff

Until the next time… keep on rockin’

Front cover nice and crisp, glossy, with just minor wear marks hear and there
Hustler

One of the more obscure British bands. They only did two albums, but both are great examples of classic British rock. High Street is a little reminiscent of UFO, while the more direct Play Loud is almost AC/DC’ish. But both excellent in their own right.

eBay listings: High Street, Play Loud

Strife

Even more obscure perhaps are Strife and I have their LP titled Rush  (no not that Rush) for sale. An interesting album, my favourite track is Indian Dream.

Clive John

Any fans of Welsh band, Man will be familiar with the name, Clive John featured on a number of Man albums but here is his solo effort which boasts some great stuff as well as one of the more bizarre celebrity contributions in the form of a mock radio interview about ferrets featuring pop idol Andy Fairweather Low and composer John Williams… I can only think Clive John must have had compromising photos of the two of them to entice them into doing this!

eBay Listing – Clive John – You Always Know Where You Are With a Buzzard

One seriously mad dude!

I will shortly have some more stuff listed from the likes of Hawkwind, Man, Deep Purple, Rush, UFO and many more…

Cleaning Vinyl, the sequel

Cleaning liquids

I have spent a lot of time over the past months researching and trying different methods for cleaning vinyl records.

My most recent efforts have focused on experimenting on homemade cleaning liquids. This was triggered by some very poor experiences of so called professional cleaning liquids bought on the internet.

The last liquid I bought basically clogged up the grooves and attracted every piece of dust within a thirty foot radius. Despite every effort to dry the vinyl for days at a time and using every carbon fibre brush and microfibre cloth known to man, I could not get the record clean of the gunge this liquid imposed on it.

The solution (geddit?)

in the end, almost out of desperation I modified another homemade recipe I read about online and lo and behold, eureka, and all sorts of other expressive phrases!

The best bit? It costs next to nothing. You just need clean water, I use one of those home water filters (Brita, Pur etc.) and just add a squirt of dishwasher rinse aid.

if you don’t have a water filter then a bottle of distilled water from your local hardware store will do the trick.

The application

to apply, firstly I lay one large microfibre cloth down to place the record on. I kept one of the spray bottles from the crap cleaning liquid I bought to store and apply my solution.

First you need something to cover the label with. I use one of the spindle ends from the Disco-Antistatic cleaning gadget I used to use which is perfect because it is designed to cover the label. It is also handy to hold the record steady while you wipe the excess liquid off.

Disco Antistatic

With the label covered, I spray the liquid on liberally. I then use my Tacky Toner roller to evenly spread the liquid across the vinyl.

Tonar Tacky Cleaner
Not what it was designed for but it is very effective for making sure the liquid is evenly spread and finds it’s way into the grooves.

Next, wipe off the excess liquid with a microfibre cloth and then use a second microfibre cloth to dry the vinyl as best as possible.

Apple Cleaning cloth
Those nice quality Apple cloths are good for drying your vinyl.
Drying process

Make sure the vinyl is thoroughly dry before playing. If you have an airing cubboard or similar warm, dry area, leave the record in there for several hours, overnight if necessary.

Playing

when it comes round to playing time, I just use a carbon fibre brush to make sure there is no loose dust in the grooves and a stylus brush to make sure that is clean also.

Carbon Fibre Brush

Well that’s all folks! Hope it works for you. Would love to hear about any other similarly cheap and successful methods (We can’t all afford one of those record vacuum cleaner things!)
